HARRISBURG – Governor Edward G. Rendell is encouraging Pennsylvanians to take simple steps to prevent house fires during Fire Prevention Week, which runs through Oct. 11 in Pennsylvania.
“This year’s theme focuses on preventing home fires, and we all can contribute to keeping our families and belongings safe from fires,” Governor Rendell said. “This week is a reminder to work together with our loved ones to focus on prevention and the creation of a home evacuation plan.”
The National Fire Protection Association reports that fire departments across the United States responded to 399,000 home fires in 2007, which resulted in more than 13,000 civilian injuries, 2,865 civilian deaths and $7.4 billion in direct damages.
“Home fires are often caused by cooking accidents, heating or electrical malfunctions, or smoking materials,” said State Fire Commissioner Ed Mann. “Many times these fires can be prevented by not leaving food unattended on the stove, by using electrical appliances and supplemental heating systems safely, and by not smoking indoors.
“If a fire does occur in your home, your chances of surviving increase dramatically if you have working smoke detectors on every level of the home and a fire escape plan in place. Even small children can be taught what to do and where to go in case of a fire at home,” Mann said.
When evaluating their homes, Mann said people should make sure that:
· Electrical cords are in good condition – not frayed or with wires exposed;
· All smoke detectors work when tested;
· Curtains, bedding, and flammable furniture are away from any portable heater or fireplace;
· The clothes dryer vent is not clogged with lint and other debris;
· The furnace has been inspected in the past year; and
· The fireplace chimney is inspected and cleaned annually.
“Simple steps taken now to keep your family safe can prevent the loss of life and property in a fire this winter and all year long,” Mann said. “Firefighters are always ready to respond to a call and they are willing to risk their lives to save others, but we’d rather work with you to prevent a fire before it even happens.”
